Silliman Gears Up for 109th Founders Day

The press launching of the Miss Silliman pageant and the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambasa open the month of August, continuing the series of activities for the 109th Founders Day.

"Queen Building," an art exhibit by a local artist, is the first activity for the month-long celebration and was launched by the Cultural Affairs Committee on July 24. The exhibit is open to the public at the Foyer of the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium until August 14.

This year's Founders Day theme is “Silliman at 109: Raised on Eagles' Wings." It is inspired by the song On Eagles' Wings.

Considered a major activity in Dumaguete City, the Founders Day welcomes thousands of alumni back on the Silliman campus. It lines up various activities throughout the month, registering the highest attendance in the University parade, Parada Sillimaniania, which is scheduled on August 27, and in the activities on August 28: Sunrise Service, Outstanding Sillimanian Awards and Tipon Dumaguete, a gathering of alumni and reunioning batches. Different alumni chapters across the globe share the festive mood with their own Founders Day celebrations.

On August 15, members of the Silliman community will gather at the Silliman University Church for the Founders Day Opening Worship. Another worship service, which is also organized by the University Spiritual Life Council, caps the celebration on August 30.

Preparations for the 109th Founders Day are handled by the Founders Day Committee headed by College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Margaret Udarbe-Alvarez.

Silliman was founded on August 28, 1901 by Presbyterian missionaries led by Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and wife, Laura. It was named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a philanthropist from Cohoes, New York who donated the initial sum of $10,000 to start what was then known as Silliman Institute. Silliman was granted university status in 1938. The University is regarded as among the top higher education institutions in the Philippines with a current student population of over 8,000 from different parts of the Philippines and other countries.
