The recognition goes to what are adjudged as the best literary works in English by Filipino writers culled from the annual crop published in the magazine. First handed out in 1949, its roster of winners has included many of the giants of Philippine literature, including Sillimanian and National Artist for Literature Dr. Edith L. Tiempo. The
Philippines Free Press Magazine, one of the country’s oldest
news magazines, is celebrating its centennial this year. .............................................................................................................................................. Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III turned over to the Misamis Occidental Silliman Alumni Association donations gathered over the Founders Week celebration for the victims of the crisis in Mindanao. In an appeal made August 22 Malayang enjoined members of Silliman and Dumaguete community to share whatever resources they have “to uplift the living conditions of those affected.” “The effects of the crisis in Mindanao arising from the conflict between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front transcend politics… Our brothers and sisters – Christians, Muslims and lumads alike – who are affected by this crisis in Mindanao now live a life dictated by the sound of a bullet and the sight of armed groups,” he said. No matter how modest, he added in the appeal, Silliman is responding to the crisis as it “cannot stand on the side of this humanitarian tragedy.” This appeal generated 19 boxes of clothing, food items and medicines from Silliman students, faculty, staff and alumni and members of the Silliman Medical Center Foundation, Inc. Total cash donations reached P20,000. The donations were turned over to Chapter President Jun Pagalaran who sits as provincial board member of Misamis Occidental. Also present at the event were officers of the chapter and affiliate member Misamis Occidental Governor Loreto Leo Campos whose children studied at Silliman.
